For many of us, the idea of an architecturally stunning home with the perfect blend of space, style and instant entertainment in any room, is an aspirational dream.
That dream has become a reality in the South of England, at Southampton’s brand new Huf Haus development - the biggest of its kind in the UK. This new development in Chilworth, Southampton features 4 stunning Huf Haus homes in 2 designs, all with in excess of 4000sqft over three levels.
These homes, as featured on Grand Designs, are a new phenomenon in the UK and are growing in popularity. Designed and manufactured to order in Germany, they are shipped to their destination IKEAstyle and then assembled with loving care by a dedicated team of Huf Haus builders. With their stunning architecture giving space and light in abundance from any aspect, these homes demand a truly stylish and contemporary home entertainment system to enhance the unique living experience. The property developer knew that in a home of this kind, his discerning buyers would expect some kind of integrated package, so he consulted home technology experts SmartHomeLife to guide him through the maze of choices available.

SmartHomeLife is a smart home consultancy providing a complete design and installation service for property developers and residential homeowners. With their reputation for exceptional customer service and high quality installations, the client was keen to find out how he could make these unique homes even more attractive to prospective buyers, starting with a high specification package for the show home. Sitting down with the client to discuss the project in more detail enabled the installers to gain a much clearer picture of the requirements. As well as being able to enjoy high-definition TV around the house and a dedicated home cinema, the developer wanted to offer the convenience of the buyer’s CD and DVD collections available instantly from any room. He also needed the system to be very easy to use and blend discreetly into the home. In fact, aesthetics were one of the biggest priorities on this project; the client wanted to make sure the system was in keeping with the clean and elegant lines of the property, with all AV equipment out of sight.

After careful planning and design, the Control4 home automation system was chosen for audio distribution around the home and easy control of entertainment in any room from touchscreen, handheld remote or onscreen TV menu,. The installation itself was relatively straightforward, with all the necessary electronics located in a central “plant” room containing all the building’s services. The remaining equipment around the house included on-wall speakers, several HD-ready flatscreen displays, in-wall touchscreens and last but not least the custom-designed home cinema room. Here a fixed 2.5M screen and ceiling-mounted projector combine to stunning effect with one of the finest lifestyle surround sound packages - a real treat for the eyes and ears. An iDyl media server completed the lifestyle package with its simple TV browsing of music and movies proving very popular with everyone who tried it.

Many installations require changes of some kind along the way and the ability to remain flexible and adaptable throughout the project is a real plus. This was one such occasion, when SmartHomeLife realised the property’s light fittings being installed were not an ideal match for the originally planned speakers. After discussion with the client the recommended replacements were agreed and the order changed - now a perfect match.
As with most larger installation projects, there is an element of programming to customise the system for the end user. This system required a slightly different approach, with a “visitors” package including sample music and movies that would show the property off to best effect. With their technical pedigree, the installers were also able to setup an automatic “kiosk” mode for weekends with a carefully designed programme of TV, music and movies playing in the background. The client was delighted with this, as he could show off the system with just one touch whenever showing round prospective buyers.
As the icing on the cake, SmartHomeLife even integrated with the existing security system, not an original requirement, giving a 4-camera view of the whole property on all the TVs in the house.
More and more new homes are including some kind of integrated smart home package as standard and in many cases this extends to complete control of lighting and heating as well as entertainment. With a fantastic lifestyle experience for the whole family blended into an icon of modern architecture, this Huf Haus is what many other homes can only dream of being - truly smart.
